Henderson, Nev., to Host Worldʼs Top Long-Distance Triathletes Next Month
ITU Long Distance World Championships held in U.S. for first time since 1996
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Nearly 400 of the United Statesʼ top long-distance triathletes will have the opportunity to compete for a world title on their home soil next month when the International Triathlon Union Long Distance Triathlon World Championships are contested Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, Nev.
All athletes will complete a 4-kilometer swim, 120-kilometer bike and 30-kilometer run with action beginning at 7 a.m. Pacific. Visit lowerysmultisport.com for more information on the event, which was last held in the United States in 1996 in Muncie, Ind.
Elite men representing the U.S. include Michael Lovato (Boulder, Colo.), Jordan Rapp (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Nicholas Thompson (Danville, Calif.).
Also slated to compete in the men's event is 2009 and 2010 Ironman 70.3 world champion Michael Raelert of Germany. Visit triathlon.org for the menʼs start list.
In the womenʼs elite event, long-distance standouts Mary Beth Ellis (Boulder, Colo.), Malaika Homo (Salt Lake City, Utah), Meredith Kessler (San Francisco, Calif.) and Amanda Lovato (Boulder, Colo.) will represent the U.S.
Great Britainʼs Leanda Cave, who was third at this monthʼs Ironman World Championships in Kona, is also on the start list. Ellis placed 15th in Kona and was the No. 3 U.S. women's finisher. Visit triathlon.org for the womenʼs start list.
On the age group side, Team USA will feature 380 age-groupers who qualified for Long Distance Worlds at the 2010 USA Triathlon Long Course Triathlon National Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and at this yearʼs Wildflower Triathlon and Pigman Long Course Triathlon.

About the 2011 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships:
The International Triathlon Union, USA Triathlon, the city's of Henderson and Las Vegas and Lowery's Multi-sport Races will host the 2011 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships which will be held in Henderson, Nev., USA, on Saturday, November 5, 2011. The distances for the race will be a 4K swim, a 120K bike and a 30K run. Athletes from all across the world must qualify to compete in the world championship race, which will be held on US soil for the first time in more than 15 years.
